Zebra Moray, Gymnomuraena zebra
Max size: 60 inches
Fish safe: Yes
Reef safe: Yes, excepting crustaceans
Minimum tank size: 125 gallons
The beautiful zebra moray is a striking eel for the large home aquarium, being docile towards fishes and invertebrates, except crustaceans. This large eel adapts readily to captivity, and has a very unique pattern of alternating black, brown, and white vertical stripes.
Ensure that plenty of hiding places are made available, as the zebra moray can be very shy, especially during the daylight hours. Be aware that this species is a fast grower: my zebra moray is growing almost an inch per month! When choosing a zebra moray, I recommend purchasing a smaller specimen, as they seem to adapt to aquarium life faster than the larger eels. Feed the zebra eel a wide variety of raw seafoods, live crabs if you can get them, and frozen formula foods twice a week. Don't forget a fitted aquarium lid - moray eels are excellent escape artists!
