Our grading scale:
Captive Aquatics Editors Choice Award: products earning this reward are beyond excellent! Often innovative, performing above and beyond expected, having virtually no flaws and/or being quality enough to be an industry staple, few products attain this reward. These are products we would go out of our way to get, and pay the extra cost associated, and are products that we use ourselves. An example of a product worthy of this award is Apogee Instrument's MQ-200 PAR Meter.
Excellent: Excellent aquarium products perform better than expected, offer new or unique features, and are quality products, and have only minor drawbacks. We would not hesitate to recommend an Excellent product. An example of an Excellent product would be Red Sea's Berlin X2 Turbo skimmer.
Good: Good aquarium products are solidly designed and constructed, and perform well, but didn't impress us with features or convenience, or if they did, they were be marred by at least one flaw. Good products are also recommended. An example of a Good product would be AquaMedics' NanoWave 9 all-in-one tank.
Fair: Fair products are products that didn't impress us, have at least one major flaw, do not feature quality construction, have a design that is questionable in usefulness, or do not work as well as advertised. We would probably not recommend a Fair product. An example of a Fair product would be AquaC's Nano Remora protein skimmer.
Poor: A poor product is a product that is not well constructed, does not perform as advertised, or has known issues that have not been addressed. We would never recommend a Poor product, and would warn against purchasing. An example of a Poor product is Hydor's 700 series protein skimmers.
In a product comparison, the same testing environments will be used, as well as products that have similar ratings (if applicable) and price. We make every effort to perform 'apples to apples' comparisons, and will make note of a product that is an 'outlier' in a comparison. We are very honest with our reviews!
A note for lighting reviews: we no longer create or post open-air PAR plots, because they have little relavance in real-world application for a variety of reasons.
All reviews are the opinion of the reviewer, and by sending a product for review you or the company you represent acknowledges that a publicly viewable review will be posted, and that all reviews maybe be subjective and are to be considered entirely an opinion for all intents and purposes.
