While vastly improved and heading in the right direction, I am frustrated that
many of the current AIO systems tend to neglect the fact that nano aquariums
are most often used and purchased by nano reefers, and not other types
of aquarists. The AIO's even target nano reefers, with most offering
reef-intensity lighting. Why, then, do manufacturers neglect such things
as proper water motion (one return nozzle is virtually standard!) and
constant-level skimming chambers? Why include a bio-filter chamber +
media, unnecessary in a nano reef? AIO systems that do include a skimmer
seem to do so as an afterthought; usually placing a poorly-made skimmer in a
variable level chamber, which is no way to properly skim a reef, and/or neglect
to install the proper amount of baffling to prevent micro-bubbles from entering
the aquarium.
While Robbert has been manufacturing a high-quality line of skimmers for today's
AIO reefs by hand, we both look forward what tomorrow brings: while
improved water motion is one of the things I most long to see in an AIO, we
both agree that other features lacking are lighting, and quality skimmers and skimmer
chambers/baffling.
Luckily, a few companies have been listening, and plan on debuting
much-improved nano reef aquariums in time for the holidays. The Captive
Aquatics blog is preparing a large showdown, comparing the up-and-coming nano
aquariums. Manufacturers have been kind enough to send us review units of
aquariums they haven't released yet (insider info: be prepared for LED
lighting, dual wave-controlled outputs, and more goodies!), so stay tuned this
holiday season to find out if they're everything we've been hoping for...or not.
Lastly, please let me know what you, the nano reefer, wants to see in an AIO aquarium! Comment here to let me know, and who knows...you might just see it!
Update 6/2010: Robbert is sending over a custom-made skimmer for our new Red Sea Max 130D! The full review should be posted next month.
