I recently purchased the Coralife Aqua Gloves to minimize the introduction of any contaminants. If you’re like me and constantly find crud on your arms and hands, gloves are absolutely necessary.
Fit and Features
My hands aren’t quarterback quality, but they’re definitely not the smallest hands either. When I first put the gloves on, there was plenty of room for my hands and arms. Since the elastic garter extended up to 28 inches, the gloves went well past my elbows. One thing not stated by Coralife is that the gloves are not powder free. The gloves are made of out PVC which makes it hard to conform to the shape of your hands. There is a hole near the elastic garter to allow air to escape and keep the inside ventilated. Unfortunately, there is not enough ventilation as my arms felt completely drenched from sweat.
Water Change with Aqua Gloves
After inserting my hands into the water, I realized how hard it was to handle things. I could barely manage to hold the siphon tube and kicked up a storm of sand in the process. At least 5 of my corals and part of my aquascape were knocked down due to the size of the gloves. It did not get any better as I tried to restructure the rocks. The worse part of the experience was the extreme difficulty of picking up a dead snail.
Conclusion
As a universal glove, I thought the extra space was a great idea to make sure anyone could use the gloves. Instead, it made every task relatively harder to perform within tank. Most women and children will not be able to fit the gloves well; I would not recommend it to them. It did perform well and did not get my hands or arms wet…at least, not from tank water. My best recommendation is to try on the Aqua Gloves before you make your purchase. For some, these gloves will work like a charm. For most, going back to using bare hands won't sound like a bad idea. I have ordered some gloves that I will be replacing the Aqua Gloves with and will report back.
