JBJ NanoGlo LED Refugium Light Hands-On

JBJ Lighting sent several products our way over Christmas break, and I'm almost caught up reviewing them all (see our TrueTemp review and our 28 NanoCube hands-on)!  So, on to yet another JBJ Product: the Nano GLO LED refugium light!

The NanoGLO is a magnetically mounted LED light designed for JBJ's 28 gallon Nanocube, but is very versatile and can be used on many all-in-one nano aquariums.  The unit consists of four 6500k (the perfect wavelength for macro growth) 1w LED lights in nifty parabolic reflectors.  The light produced is very intense, and penetrates well through about 12" of water.  JBJ advertises the LEDs emitting 70 lumens each, but anyone who's read my article about lighting marine invertebrates knows that lumens are a completely pointless measurement in the hobby.

Fun Freshwater Aquarium Invertebrates!

I personally enjoy having freshwater aquariums full of interesting and active fish but, I have to admit, I love freshwater invertebrates more!  Invertebrates (animals without backbones) are mostly seen in saltwater aquariums, but you can find a few interesting animals to include in a freshwater aquarium.  Listed are a few highlighted favorites of mine and their basic care requirements.

EcoXotic LED Aquarium Lighting - First Impression

After showcasing EcoXotic's awesome Panorama LED Lighting Video back in October, our new EcoXotic rep was kind and generous enough to send over a goody box full of nifty LED aquarium lighting treats!  Although a full review is forthcoming, let me just say that these are some bright, colorful, easy-to-use, and most importantly, high quality LED lights.

Hydor has redesigned the older Koralia reef aquarium water pumps into a more compact, efficient, and effective product, the Koralia Evolution.  Our Hydor rep sent their Koralia Evo 750 and newly redesigned Koralia Nano for a tryout.  Full review coming soon!

Thai Navy Protects Sea Turtles

For the past two decades the Royal Thai Navy has been active in sea turtle conservation by supporting the Thailand Sea Turtle Conservation Center (they released 20,000 green & hawksbill sea turtle hatchlings this year!), and by keeping training exercises away from nesting grounds.  Check out this video of the hatchlings being released:

AquaC Remora Nano Skimmer Review

AquaC was awesome enough to send over their new-ish (new at the time they sent it!) Nano Remora protein skimmer.  I was able to test it out a few months back, and now I finally have time to post my results.

Green Sea Slug: Part Animal, Part Plant!

As many hobbyists know, sea slugs of the genus Elysia ingest chloroplasts from algae they feed upon and store them in their bodies for additional energy.  However, a new sea slug, Elysia chlorotica has been discovered that makes its own chloroplasts, just like a plant or algae would, from genes that it takes from its food!

The Marine Aquarium Hobby in Retrospect: 2009

After a hectic "holiday season", I/we are back (trying to be back?) at penning for the CA blog.  I wanted to write a brief opinion piece of the hobby in 2009.

As a marine aquarium hobbyist since 1993, a marine aquatics author since 2001, and a "professional" for a year, I've seen a lot of things come, go, stay, and change in our hobby, for better or for worse.  For better or for worse, this is the first year I felt that the beginning of the end was palpable for the marine and reef aquarium hobby in it's current state.
