You get tired of eating the same thing everyday, right? So do your fish! Here is a quick tip on where to find live food that is good for your fish to snack on. Just make sure when collecting live food that the collection site is free of pollution and that you have permission to collect live animals from that location!
1. Mosquito larvae: Very easy to obtain, just put out a buck of de-chlorinated water and voila! You will have a bucket of mosquito larvae to feed to any tropical fish.
2. Tadpoles: Another easy to find food for tropical fish are tadpoles! Just take a stroll to a local shallow pond or ditch in the spring and summer and catch a few tadpoles. My bettas love the smaller sized tadpoles to chase and eat.
3. Ghost Shrimp: I can personally find these little shrimp in ditches during the early spring months, and saltwater species can be found on many coasts. Ghost shirmp make great food for larger predatory cichlids, puffers, anglerfish, and more!
4. Earthworms: Many freshwater fish will dine on a fat earthworm, just simply dig a few up in a pesticide free area. I prepare mine by letting them sit in a container without dirt for a week before feeding them to my puffer. Who wants to eat something full of dirt? I would not.
5. Crickets: These I personally have to purchase from a pet store. They are a great source of protein and many cichlids love them! Simply drop them in the aquarium and watch your fish gorge themselves - Oscar fish especially!
6. Snails: Ramshorn snails, mystery snails, and common pond snails all make excellent food for fish. Obviously larger fish will need larger snails and vice versa! Snail are especially good live food for pufferfish.
Some of these food items can also make fun aquarium invertebrates!
