It's not often that I'm a 'fanboy' of anything or anyone - heck, I will point out how bad a product is, even if it's given to me! However, when something or someone has consistently made quality products for a long period of time, I can be converted. Seachem has been making superb aquarium products for as long as I've been in the hobby (nearly twenty years), and their latest Nutridiet foods are no exception.
Well, we're stuck with this (cheesy) demo video of Fluval's new "revolutionary" canister filter, the Fluval G, in action. Unfortunately, our rep at Hagen said that the marketing dept. was locking down, and only shipping units to "preferred vendors" (retails stores) in mid-November, and that the filter isn't even going to be available online, at least initially. Well, we all know my opinion of local fish stores...so I won't be seeing this display in person.
Overall, although the electronics seem nice, the filter itself doesn't seem to have the capacity or capabilities that the Fluval FX5 does, in terms of filtering messy freshwater aquariums. Since canister filters are really only useful on freshwater aquariums, this does seem to be a possible waste of innovation on Fluval's part, as does the G's built-in salinity measuring Well, without further ado:
For all of you freshwater enthusiasts, the new Fluval G looks to deliver in both aesthetics and performance. Featuring a slick design, modular filter cartridges, and a spiffy LCD panel that displays flow rate and conductivity real-time (and more!), the new G is meant to impress. Don't worry, the review is coming soon, and in the meantime check out the latest promo media from the boys over at Hagen!
Hydor has always been generous to us here at the Captive Aquatics blog, but unfortunately this review won't be kind to their latest line of skimmers, the Performer series. Today I'm reviewing their Performer 700, a skimmer designed to operate on a tank between 185-265 gallons, depending on the stocking level.
Coral Magazine, once a quality and sought after publication from Germany, has returned! Published now in the good 'ol US of A by the same publishers bringing you Aquarium Explorer, I'm excited that about the return of Coral Magazine. I've reviewed the January/February issue (though the latest is June/July, I won't spoil it for you!) and I wanted to offer my thoughts.
I've never been a big fan of slime coat replacement water conditions - they generally don't have that much of an effect, and they make your protein skimmer go nuts with foam production. I'm even less of a fan of additives that aren't made by Seachem. However, Hagen/Nutrafin's Aqua Plus is awesome.
I've had the pleasure of having a digital subscription to TFH for the last two months, and I must say: I've been enjoying it. I'll be the first to admit I'm not the magazine 'type', for lack of a better expression. To give you an idea about my reluctance to subscribe to print magazines, I've written for several, and purposely subscribed to none! However, I've been an avid reader of Advanced Aquarist (a superb online saltwater aquarium magazine) since its inception, but any magazine in print is out of site, out of mind! However, when TFH was offering $1 digital subscriptions on Earth Day, I thought "what the heck, if it's online, I'll read it" - and I have.
What if I told you that you could get a simply designed, high quality in-sump protein skimmer rated for 135 gallons (and possibly under-rated by the manufacturer) that skimmed incredibly well with both wet and dry foam for under $200, and was easy to clean to boot? I wouldn't believe me, either, but that was before I was lucky enough to review AquaEuro USA's Classic 135 protein skimmer!
Welcome to aquarium product reviews at the Captive Aquatics blog, your source for accurate aquarium product reviews, and more!
We begin May's protein skimmer roundup with a classic protein skimmer line that has been serving the hobby well for nearly two decades. Red Sea was kind enough to donate their latest skimmer for review, and now it's time to see if the Berlin X2 Turbo maintains the same standard of quality and versatility that the Berlin series of skimmers is known for!
Planted tanks require fertilizer for optimum growth. For my first planted tank, I picked Flourite because it was on sale, and I know Seachem makes quality products. I wanted to write a review about a product that helped my planted tank out a lot: Flourite.
